Liz’s Bed and Breakfast

Bernheimer has an extensive collection of maps and books about San Francisco and says she is an excellent tour advisor for interesting walks and by-ways. Noe’s Nest
If you like sociability, this is the place. Owner Sheila Rubinson welcomes guests as part of the family. She likes to chat over coffee, offers discounts from 24th street merchants, and on occasion, even serves as an unofficial tour guide. The main floor is decorated with a mix of Aboriginal masks, Japanese furniture, antiques, and family photos. Each of the five guest rooms has a theme, such as Oriental Room , Garden Room , and Castaway Room . The smallest has a sleeping loft over the bathroom and closet. The largest has a steam room, king-size bed, corner fireplace, a large deck, and a great view. Breakfast includes fruit, cheeses, lox, bagels, and Joseph Schmidt designer truffles. Each room has a private bathroom and cable TV, VCR, and phone. Rates are $99 to $195.

Oliver House
This two-room B & B is actually an in-law apartment with double bed, desk, dresser, and walk-in closet, and is tastefully decorated in Laura Ashley-style prints. The small bathroom off the living room has a tiled shower. Couch and chairs are set around a brick fireplace. Kitchen has a stove, microwave, and small refrigerator. Breakfast is usually a sweet roll, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. Cable TV and private phone line. No-children are allowed although infants are permitted. Spare Room
This is ideal for budget-minded travelers who don’t mind strolling two blocks to buy their own breakfast at nearby Hungry Joe’s. The Victorian-style house has a short set of steps leading to a patio/garden and into a small bedroom which features a double bed and desk and small side porch. Bathroom and shower are halfway down the stairs. $45 per night with one-week limit. Berg suggests that guests come by and see the space first because the unusual space works for some but not for everyone.

Summer Cottage is located in a turn of the century Victorian on a tree-lined lane around the corner from 24th street, the center of Noe Valley. The Hidden Cottage is a two-story white Victorian that began life as a farmhouse in the 1870s. The guest room at the back is reached through a garden of impatiens, roses, and plum trees then up a wooden staircase. The skylight keeps the room light and airy.
