| Title: | Stardust & Empty Wagons - World premiere at Brava |
| Description: | Brava Theater Center presents
the World Premiere of
STARDUST and EMPTY WAGONS
Stories from the Katrina Diaspora
with music performed by The Hot 8 Brass Band
Script and Direction by Ellen Gavin
Limited Three-Week Engagement
Nov. 7 - Nov. 25, 2007
Developed from the testimony of Katrina survivors in the Bay Area, Stardust and Empty Wagons is a tribute to the culture, music and everyday life of a New Orleans now struggling to be reborn. With live music performed by New Orleans’ own The Hot 8 Brass Band, ten actors portray tales of terror and bravery from the greatest disaster in U.S. history.
Continuing in the populist genre of onstage docudrama / testimonial theatre (Execution of Justice, The Laramie Project, and Jonestown), Stardust and Empty Wagons--Stories of the Katrina Diaspora is a multi-disciplinary theatrical tapestry written by Ellen Gavin from the direct testimony of Katrina survivors living in the Bay Area. The show will feature live music composed and performed by of one of New Orleans hottest young brass bands, The Hot 8 Brass Band.* Ten actors, including Katrina survivors, portray the narrowing tales of brute survival during the disaster, as people were left to fend for themselves in a kind of post-apocalyptic nightmare. We also go back in time to learn of the building of the Ninth Ward in the old “barn-raising” style of the 1930’s and 40’s, the intricacies of New Orleans cuisine, family structures and racial identities. We come to understand the apartheid that existed in a city where the education of Blacks, particularly of Black girls, was not considered of value.
